What most still call Scream 5 finished production ahead of its scheduled release in early 2022. The upcoming sequel, officially titled Scream, completed principal photography in November in North Carolina. The filmmakers have since worked to complete the film’s post-production, and on Wednesday night co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin revealed that the new Scream is officially in the box.
” Scream (2022) is over! We are delighted that you are all seeing it soon, ”wrote Bettinelli-Olpin, adding the hashtag #ForWes.
Back in November, executive and original producer Scream Writer Kevin Williamson revealed the shoot was finished by posting some packaging photos from the shoot. He also revealed that the new movie will be called Scream rather than Scream 5, perhaps because there are new filmmakers at the helm. Wes Craven, who directed the previous four Scream films and intended to do Scream 5, died in 2015.
“It’s a wrap on Scream, which I am pleased to announce is the official title of the next film! Almost 25 years ago, when I wrote Scream and Wes Craven brought it to life, I couldn’t have imagined the lasting impact it would have on you, the fans, ”Williamson said in the thread. Twitter.
“I am delighted that you are returning to Woodsboro and that you are very scared again,” added Williamson. “I think Wes would have been so proud of the movie Matt and Tyler are making. I am delighted to reunite with Neve, Courteney, David and Marley, and to work alongside a new team of directors and an incredible cast of newcomers who have come together to continue Wes’ legacy with the upcoming relaunch of the frankness that is so dear to my heart. See you in theaters in January 2022. ”
As Williamson says, Scream (2022) will see the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks. Roger L. Jackson will also be back as the voice of Ghostface. Newcomers to the cast of the upcoming slasher film include Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sonia Ben Ammar, Mikey Madison, Mason Gooding and Kyle Gallner.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett direct the new Scream on a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Although series star Neve Campbell was hesitant to make the film without Wes Craven’s participation, she ultimately agreed after having conversations with the filmmakers who took the keys to the franchise. It was clear to Campbell that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett wanted to “honor and respect Wes’s vision.”
“I definitely had a period where I thought it would be too weird to make a movie without Wes, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to do that,” she told THR last year. “But, I think enough time has passed. I received this letter really, really respectful of the directors of the new. They wrote a letter honoring Wes in such a beautiful way, and they expressed that the reason they make horror movies is because of Wes and the Scream cinema. They also expressed how blown away they are at having the opportunity to make one and how much they want to honor and respect Wes’ vision. “
Scream is slated for release on January 14, 2022. With production officially over, hopefully a trailer isn’t too far away. This news comes to us from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin on Twitter.
