That was one of the big questions about “Black Widow”: was Iron Man going to be there? Those who have seen the film before know it has not. Yet, for a while, there was talk of making it appear.
Black widow : MCU Phase 4 debut movie
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black widow serves as the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This is the first Marvel Studios film directed by a woman, it is the first film in Phase 4 of the MCU, and especially the first Marvel film to be released since the start of the pandemic. The opportunity for Marvel Studios to go back in time, and to offer its own spin-off to La Veuve Noire.
Thus, since the heroine dies in Avengers: Endgame, Black widow had to go back in time. The plot of the footage therefore unfolds between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. A period during which Natasha Romanoff is an outlaw hunted down by General Ross. A period of time during which the powerful Iron Man was also still alive. The hero played by Robert Downey Jr. also finds his death in Avengers: Endgame. But this trip to the past could have marked the great comeback of the character on the front of the stage. And it almost happened!
Iron Man almost appeared in the movie
In an interview with Phase Zero, Eric Pearson, one of the screenwriters of Black widow, expanded on Tony Stark’s potential comeback in Cate Shortland’s film. The writer reveals that in a first draft of the script, Tony Stark was actually supposed to make a short appearance. This original story thus included the final discussion between Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff at the end of Civil War. In fact, if this idea had been retained in the final cut of the film, this would have been reused footage from the Russo Brothers movie. So certainly Iron Man would have returned, but through images already shot. Eventually, this idea was abandoned:
I remember now that in one version of the script, before I arrived, there was literally describing the end of Civil War with Tony and Natasha. But they were old pictures. It would have been “Hey audience, remember what time this is.” So it wouldn’t have been Robert Downey, at least to my knowledge. It’s the only time I’ve seen Tony Stark’s name in it. And it was just kind of a flag-planted reminder, like “Hey, we’re at the end of the civil war.”
Thus, the return of Robert Downey Jr was never really considered. In any case, not in a concrete way. Rumors of his return escalated when plot details of Black widow were unveiled. Looking back, an Iron Man cameo wouldn’t have been stupid, but would have terribly reduced the impact of the hero’s death in Avengers: Endgame. Eric Pearson also reacted to rumors surrounding Tony Stark’s return:
I remember when these rumors came out, I was in London in our writing room office, and I just looked around and thought, “I have the script here and Tony Stark n is not there. I don’t know where it came from unless someone has a very old version with that kind of scene. I do not know where it comes from.
Black widow is actually to see in the cinema since July 7. So far, this new Marvel Studios movie has grossed over $ 191 million in box office revenue.
